Local history
The name Werribee comes from the Aboriginal name for the local river, Wirribi-yaluk in the Wathawurrung and Boonwurrung languages, with wirribi meaning backbone or spine.
Members of John Batman's Port Phillip Association led early pastoral leasing in the area. A rural township emerged in the early 1850s, initially named Wyndham after Scottish soldier Sir Henry Wyndham, following a suggestion by local innkeeper Elliott Armstrong. Postal services commenced on 12 January 1858 under the Wyndham name.
Despite the township's name, the adjacent waterway was known as the Werribee River. The town adopted the name Werribee in 1884, with the Post Office following suit in 1904. The Shire Council changed its name to Werribee in 1909, governing an extensive area stretching from Melbourne's inner western suburbs to Little River and north to Melton, covering 715 square kilometres.
Thomas Chirnside recognised the open plains' agricultural potential and by 1863 controlled over 280 square kilometres around Werribee through accumulated land purchases. The railway line from Melbourne to Geelong, with a Werribee station established in 1857, supported steady town growth.
Thomas Chirnside died in 1887, found at Werribee Park with a shotgun. His brother Andrew passed three years later, dividing the property between Andrew's two sons. A new mansion called The Manor was subsequently built.
By 1881, a quarter of the Shire's population resided in Werribee Township. The area featured hotels, the Werribee Racecourse (established 1879) and the Mechanics' Institute (built 1883).
Chirnside's property housed Corpus Christi College from 1923 to 1973, serving as the seminary for Victoria and Tasmania's Catholic Church.
