Local history
Truganina is believed to be named after Truganini, generally recognised as the last full-blooded Aboriginal Tasmanian woman, who visited the area briefly during her lifetime. This naming honours her connection to the region.
The suburb comprises two distinct sections. Southern Truganina within the City of Wyndham, referred to locally as old Truganina, is bordered roughly by Skeleton Creek to the west and the Federation Trail to the south. Northern Truganina within the City of Melton encompasses the Mount Atkinson estate and surrounding rural areas.
Truganina experienced extraordinary population growth, recording 20,687 residents in 2016 and expanding to 36,305 by 2021. Projections suggested the population would reach 39,951 by 2031, representing a 1,350.6 percent increase from 2006 levels. This rapid expansion positions Truganina among Melbourne's fastest-growing suburbs.
The suburb's demographic composition reflects significant cultural diversity. In 2021, only 37.5 percent of residents were born in Australia. India represented the most common birthplace at 28.8 percent, followed by New Zealand at 3.6 percent and Philippines at 3.4 percent. Truganina and neighbouring Tarneit became Victoria's first suburbs with majority Indian populations. Language diversity is substantial, with only 29.4 percent of residents speaking exclusively English at home. Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and Telugu are widely spoken.
Transport connections serve the area through nearby railway stations. Williams Landing lies 3.5 kilometres from Truganina's centre, while Laverton, Hoppers Crossing and Tarneit stations are approximately 5 kilometres distant. Plans exist for a dedicated Truganina railway station on the Werribee line. The road network follows a street hierarchy with major corridors including Sayers Road, Leakes Road, Dohertys Road and Boundary Road.
Industrial development occupies northern and eastern sections of Truganina. Distribution centres and logistics facilities established operations due to convenient access to rail, road and air freight services. Woolworths operates a liquor distribution centre, while Kmart's distribution centre represents the largest building by footprint in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere.
