Local history
The area now called Sunshine was initially governed by the Sunshine Road District from 1860, which later became the Shire of Braybrook in 1871.
The Bendigo railway line, constructed between 1860 and 1885, was the sole rail connection through the region. Albion & Darlington station (now Albion) opened on 5 January 1860 as the area's only stop. The Ballarat line brought a new station at the junction of both lines, opening on 7 September 1885 as Braybrook Junction. The surrounding area adopted this name, and postal services began on 25 August 1890.
H. V. McKay purchased the Braybrook Implement Works in 1904, along with 400 acres of land for worker housing. Two years later, he relocated his agricultural machinery business from Ballarat to Braybrook Junction, renaming it the Sunshine Harvester Works. This facility grew to become Australia's largest manufacturing plant.
Following petitions from workers and residents, the station, post office and shire riding were renamed Sunshine in July 1907, honouring McKay's enterprise.
An industrial dispute at the Sunshine Harvester Works in 1907 resulted in the landmark Harvester Judgement, establishing Australia's minimum living wage. Tragedy struck on 20 April 1908 when a train disaster at Sunshine station claimed 44 lives.
McKay developed his purchased land into the Sunshine Estate, incorporating design elements reminiscent of the Garden city movement. He established extensive infrastructure including electric street lighting, parks, sporting facilities, public buildings, schools and a library. This industry-centred community earned recognition as a model town, with Sunshine nicknamed the Birmingham of Australia as the workforce grew.
After World War II, automobile-based transport connected Sunshine increasingly to Melbourne as residents moved to larger suburban blocks. The Shire of Braybrook was dissolved in 1951, creating the City of Sunshine.
Australian manufacturing decline through the 1970s affected Sunshine significantly. The Massey Ferguson factory, formerly the Sunshine Harvester Works, was demolished in 1992 for the Sunshine Marketplace development. The City of Sunshine merged into the newly formed City of Brimbank on 15 December 1994.
Today, Sunshine functions as both a residential suburb and a major employment centre beyond Melbourne's CBD. Industrial companies occupy the area alongside retail precincts including street shops, Sunshine Plaza, and Sunshine Marketplace with its Village 20 cinema complex. Educational facilities include Victoria Polytechnic, Sunshine College and Harvester Technical College.
