Local history
Melton was named after Melton Mowbray in the United Kingdom. The traditional custodians of land east of the Werribee River are the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples, while the Wadawurrung people are traditional owners west of the river.
Originally a country town along the Ballarat-Melbourne growth corridor, Melton was designated a satellite city of Melbourne in 1974. The suburb experienced relatively stable population since recognition as a separate suburb in the 2006 Census, recording 7,305 residents that year. Population grew to 7,593 by 2011, then 8,069 by 2016, before settling at 7,953 at the 2021 Census.
Melbourne's significant urban area boundary was redefined to include Melton in 2023, leading to headlines claiming Melbourne's population overtook Sydney's. While the City of Melton is forecast to grow by over 250,000 by 2051, most growth is predicted for surrounding suburbs, particularly Aintree, Caroline Springs and Brookfield. The suburb of Melton itself is only predicted to grow 2 percent by 2051.
Melton is located on mostly flat former volcanic plains. Mount Cottrell, a blast-shield volcano, lies to the south-east, while Mount Kororoit is positioned to the north-east. The area receives less rainfall than Melbourne due to its position within the Otway Ranges rain shadow.
The Melton Airfield, located in neighbouring Toolern Vale, provides general aviation services. Rail services connect Melton to Melbourne, with electrification and quadruplication recommended in transport planning documents. Plans show the future electrified Melton service will route through the Metro Tunnel following major upgrades at Sunshine Station.
