Local history
The traditional custodians of the Hoppers Crossing area include the Boonwurrung and Wathaurong peoples of the Kulin nation. Five distinct language groups operated within the Kulin Nation across this region, each maintaining their own tribal boundaries. The Kurang-jang-balluk clan lived east of the Werribee River extending to Kororoit Creek, their name referencing the red earth characteristic of the volcanic plains.
European colonisation disrupted Indigenous communities from the 1830s onward. Remaining Woiwurrung members joined other Kulin language groups at Coranderrk in 1864, breaking cultural protocols maintained for generations. The clan faced forced displacement again in 1924.
Hoppers Crossing was named after Elizabeth Hopper, who operated as gatekeeper of the level crossing over the railway line now known as the Werribee line. The locality developed alongside the railway infrastructure during the nineteenth century.
The suburb experienced growth spurts throughout the 1980s and 1990s as Melbourne's western suburbs expanded. Residential development accelerated during these decades, establishing Hoppers Crossing as one of Wyndham's older suburbs. The 2021 Census recorded 37,216 residents.
Transport infrastructure continues to serve the area through Hoppers Crossing railway station on the Werribee line. In November 2018, the Victorian Government announced level crossing removal at Old Geelong Road, constructing a new road bridge east of the station. The bridge opened in December 2021 with station precinct redevelopment following. Major roads including Princes Highway, Heaths Road, Derrimut Road and Tarneit Road provide connectivity throughout the region.
Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre anchors retail activity, located just across the suburb boundary. Local shopping centres and community facilities serve residents throughout established neighbourhoods.
