Local history
The suburb was originally named Kororoit Creek after the creek running through the area. The name changed to Deer Park after the Melbourne Hunt Club used the area to house their stock of game deer. The original Hunt Club building still stands on Ballarat Road, next to the Deer Park sports oval, now serving as a community centre. The Hunt Club opened on Saturday, 11 July 1885.
The Post Office opened in 1878 as Kororoit Creek and was renamed Deer Park in 1889. Following gold discoveries in Ballarat and Bendigo, demand for explosives increased significantly. Deer Park was chosen as the site of Melbourne's first explosives factory, commenced by Jones Scott and Co around 1874, later reformed as Australian Explosives and Chemical Co, then Nobel.
The 2021 Census recorded 18,145 residents. Recent development of the Cairnlea estate and improved vegetation on Kororoit Creek banks has supported return of native species. The common eastern froglet and the endangered growling grass frog have been observed in the new wetlands and around Kororoit Creek.
The Deer Park Metropolitan Women's Correctional Centre opened on 15 August 1996 as Victoria's first privately owned and operated prison. It transferred to public ownership on 3 October 2000, and was renamed the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre after prison welfare campaigner Phyllis Frost. Corrections Victoria now operates the facility.
On the southern outskirts, large farm properties have been developed for housing under development names Brimbank Gardens and St Andrews Field. The suburb is located 17 kilometres west of Melbourne's CBD within the City of Brimbank.
