Local history
The Altona area was home to Kurung-Jang-Balluk Aboriginal people of the Woiwurrung clan. These traditional custodians maintained connections to the land before European settlement disrupted established patterns.
Altona North Post Office first opened on 11 April 1960 as suburban development commenced. The office was renamed Beevers in 1966 when a new Altona North office opened in Duke Street to the south, reflecting the suburb's growth and administrative requirements.
The 2021 Census recorded 12,962 residents. Altona North borders multiple suburbs including Altona, Brooklyn, Laverton North, Newport, South Kingsville, Williamstown North and Yarraville, creating a central location within Melbourne's west.
The western section of Altona North comprises the Altona North Industrial Precinct, hosting significant industrial activity. Industries include construction, logistics, manufacturing and heavy industry. ExxonMobil's Altona Refinery, one of two oil refineries in Victoria, operates in the suburb's south-east.
The Don Smallgoods factory operated in Altona North from 1970 until 2011 when production relocated to Castlemaine. Toyota Australia's Altona Plant opened in 1978, producing vehicles from 1994 until 2017 when Toyota ceased Australian car production. As of 2023, the site houses Victoria's only commercial hydrogen fuel station for the Toyota Mirai, with hydrogen fuel cell generators manufactured on-site.
Paisley Park represents Hobsons Bay's major sporting complex, located on the corner of Mason Street and Mills Street. The facility includes a gymnasium, swimming pool, golf course, premier league soccer facility, bowling club, badminton centre, miniature railway and lacrosse fields. The park shares a boundary with Newport.
