Local history
Before European settlement, the Kurung-Jang-Balluk Aboriginal people from the Woiwurrung clan lived in the Altona region.
Alfred Langhorne built The Homestead in 1842, establishing Altona's first permanent settlement. The name 'Altona' was recorded on maps from 1861, given by German settler Frederick Taegtow after his hometown of Altona near Hamburg. Believing coal deposits existed locally, Taegtow established the Williamstown (Taegtow) Prospecting Company in 1881. Residential land sales began in 1886 across the Altona and Merton Street estates, while the Victorian Government acquired an explosives reserve in western Altona by 1901.
J. J. Hammond achieved two Australian aviation firsts at Altona Bay in February 1911: the first inter-town cross-country flight to Geelong on the 20th, and the first powered passenger flight on the 23rd. The local economy relied on coal mining between 1908 and 1919, though this industry ended in 1930 when open-cut operations commenced in the Latrobe Valley.
Population growth led to a Post Office opening on 14 January 1918. After World War II, Altona experienced significant immigration, mainly from Mediterranean and Central European countries, along with some Middle Eastern arrivals.
Altona was part of the Shire of Werribee from 1862 until 1957, when the Altona Riding separated, encompassing Altona, Altona North and Altona Meadows. This became the City of Altona in 1968. The Kennett government's local government restructuring merged it into the City of Hobsons Bay in June 1994.
