Local history
Wollert is located 26 kilometres north of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Whittlesea local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 24,407 at the 2021 census, representing extraordinary growth of 169.4% from just 9,060 in 2016—one of Victoria's highest growth rates. The suburb's name derives from the Woiwurrung word meaning where possums abound, taken from the land parish in which part of the suburb is situated.
From 1836 until the early 1850s, sheep raising dominated local activity. Thomas Wilson built Summerhill farm on Summerhill Road during the 1850s, operating a dairy, pig, and sheep farm. When he sold the property in 1886, it was regarded as one of Victoria's finest farming properties. Significant bluestone structures remain, including a bluestone house and outbuildings, a bluestone quarry, and dry stone walls in Bindts Road, all considered of high local significance. Hehr's Pine Park Farm complex in Epping Road illustrates early German building practices and agricultural resource use.
Much of the land was subdivided into smaller farm lots in 1853 with necessary access roads laid out, establishing Wollert as a dairying community. Significant dairy production continued for the Melbourne market until the 1960s, after which dairying largely ceased in favor of smaller-scale grazing, quarrying, and brickmaking. The Church of England established the first school in 1852, replaced by a bluestone Government school in 1877 that operated until 1994. Wollert Post Office opened on 1 September 1876, closed in 1895, then reopened in 1902. A Methodist Church built in 1878 replaced an earlier structure from 1859, continuing as Wollert Uniting Church before closing. During the late 1940s, the Soldier Settlement program purchased several large properties, subdivided them, and allocated plots to eligible ex-servicemen. Suburbanisation commenced in the early 2000s with explosive demographic growth. Australia's largest brickmaker, Brickworks Limited, operates a major plant in Wollert.
