Local history
Thomastown is located 16 kilometres north of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Whittlesea local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 14,234 at the 2021 census, though other metropolitan area calculations show approximately 20,234 residents. Thomastown is renowned for sharing its area with Westgarthtown, a significant historical German settlement.
European settlement began in 1848 when John Honniball Thomas and his wife Mary née Hartnell purchased 106 acres north of Melbourne for market gardening, establishing what would become Thomastown. Two years later, William Westgarth bought adjacent land to the north, facilitating settlement by German immigrants who formed the Westgarthtown community. Thomastown Post Office opened on 9 June 1862, serving the growing agricultural area. The suburb attracted numerous farmers and became known for horse-racing activities until World War II.
The opening of the Epping railway line in 1889 significantly boosted development, particularly milk production and distribution. During the 1930s, a German dairying family formed Pura Dairy in Thomastown, which later expanded into Preston and became Metropol Dairy. Thomastown Railway Station, originally opened on 23 December 1889 as a single platform facility on High Street, received major upgrades in 2011 including a second platform, 310 parking spaces, pedestrian overpass, and accessibility features.
The suburb features diverse shopping precincts along High Street near the railway station, at Edgars Road and Main Street, on Settlement Road and Dalton Road, plus various strips east of the station. Major facilities include Thomastown Secondary College, Thomastown West Primary School, Thomastown Recreational and Aquatic Centre, and Thomastown Library managed by Yarra Plenty Regional Library. The suburb hosts numerous industrial facilities south of the residential areas, an electricity terminal station, and is home to Select Harvests' corporate offices and almond processing plant.
