Local history
South Morang is situated 20 kilometres north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Whittlesea local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 24,989 at the 2021 census, showing steady growth from 24,060 in 2016. Originally known as Morang South until the early 1890s when Morang itself was renamed Yan Yean South, the area transformed from rural countryside to suburban development in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The name Morang derives from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning sky or cloud.
Before European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Wurundjeri balug and Wurundjeri Willam clans. William Hovell and Hamilton Hume became the first Europeans to traverse what is now the City of Whittlesea in 1824 during their expedition from Sydney to Port Phillip. Morang South Post Office opened on 24 November 1873, with the facility now relocated to Westfield Plenty Valley. The Melbourne to Whittlesea railway reached the area in 1889, with the original South Morang station serving the steam railway until the 1950s, positioned further north than the current facility.
South Morang features approximately 70 parks covering 37.1% of its total area, making it one of the greenest suburbs in the region. The suburb contains several sites of historical and cultural significance, including Farm Vigano and Le Page Homestead at Plenty Gorge Park, and the Carome Homestead, which now houses Two Beans and a Farm café and the Mernda Community Garden. The ethnically diverse population includes Australian-born residents alongside significant Italian, Indian, and Macedonian communities. South Morang is served by three railway stations—South Morang, Middle Gorge, and Hawkstowe—all on the Mernda line, plus numerous bus routes providing comprehensive public transport coverage.
