Local history
Roxburgh Park is located 21 kilometres north of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Hume local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 24,129 at the 2021 census. Originally part of Somerton, Roxburgh Park derives its name from the property Roxburgh, named by local farmer Thomas Brunton around 1885 after his house in Scotland. Prior to construction, architect Philip Treeby designed plans in 1889 for a garden suburb called Hopetoun, which included parks, schools, tennis courts, and shops, though these plans were never realized.
In January 1951, the Moonee Valley Racing Club purchased the 832-acre Roxburgh Park property for £35,000 as a speculative investment, providing an option if the club needed to leave its cramped Moonee Ponds location. The Victorian Government's Urban and Regional Land Corporation (later VicUrban, then Places Victoria) purchased land in 1988 to plan and develop Roxburgh Park, similar to Britain's green wedge new towns. Originally to be named Ruthvenfield, the suburb was planned for 7,000 house blocks accommodating around 20,000 residents.
Construction began in the early 1990s, with recognition promoted through widely screened television commercials throughout the mid-1990s, presenting Roxburgh Park's virtues as a planned community balancing residential and industrial land with public reserves and community services. Part of Shankland Reserve lies in southern Roxburgh Park. The suburb is bounded by Craigieburn to the north, Aitken Boulevard skirting Greenvale Reservoir to the west, the Craigieburn railway line to the east, and Somerton Road to the south. Roxburgh Park has been described as one of Melbourne's multicultural hot spots. The suburb features three large shopping centres: Roxburgh Park Shopping Centre on Somerton Road with 70 specialist stores, Roxburgh Plaza and Homemaker Centre on Pascoe Vale Road, and Roxy Central on Fouz Street. Roxburgh Park station opened on 30 September 2007 when electrification extended from Broadmeadows to Craigieburn, located approximately at the former Somerton railway station site.
