Local history
Reservoir is one of Melbourne's largest suburbs by land area, located 12km north of the CBD. When the railway was opened between Collingwood and Whittlesea in 1889, with a station at "Preston (Reservoir)", settlement in Reservoir was confined to High and Edwardes Streets, with the remaining land used for farming.
Merri Lands, in the north-west of Reservoir, was originally a dairy farm. The Merrilands Estate (1918) at Hughes Parade and Botha Avenue was a garden-city-inspired design by Saxel Tuxen. An Anglican church opened near the railway station before 1914, followed by a Presbyterian church in the early 1920s.
A primary school opened in the Anglican church in 1917 and moved to permanent premises in 1924. A supporter of the Anglican church, Dyer Edwards, donated 14 hectares of land to Preston Council for a park, now the popular Edwardes Lake park. In 1921, Reservoir's census population was just 451 people.
Urban growth accelerated during the 1920s with improved rail connections. The three postwar decades saw an influx of Italian, Greek, and other European immigrants into the Reservoir area, later followed by Asian refugees in the 1980s. The suburb has developed into a vibrant, diverse community with excellent recreation facilities and shopping precincts.
Reservoir is close to Northland Shopping Centre, Preston Market, Sydney Road shops and restaurants, and the Coburg Drive-In cinema. The area continues to experience growth with new developments throughout the suburb.
