Local history
Pascoe Vale is situated 9 kilometres north of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Merri-bek local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 18,171 at the 2021 census, showing steady growth from 13,210 in the 2001 census. Pascoe Vale was named after John Fawkner's property Pascoeville, originally a 709-acre holding established in 1839. The property was bounded by Moonee Ponds Creek to the west, Gaffney Street to the south, Northumberland Road to the east, and Rhodes Parade to the north. John Pascoe Fawkner built a timber house overlooking the creek in the Marie Street area of Oak Park.
Pascoe Vale Post Office opened on 25 September 1911, with a Pascoe Vale West Post Office operating from 1927 to 1976. Pascoe Vale Road was originally called Sydney Road in the mid-19th century. For much of the 19th century, a Cobb & Co waystation operated where a fast food outlet now exists on Pascoe Vale Road. Several locally significant historic buildings exist within the suburb, including the Turner Street Precinct and Gavin Park, containing collections of substantially intact inter-war and post-war houses constructed in the 19th century.
According to the 2021 census, Pascoe Vale is less culturally diverse than other Merri-bek suburbs, with 65.1% of residents born in Australia—the highest proportion in the municipality. Common languages spoken at home include Italian (6.4%), Arabic (3.7%), Greek (3.7%), Mandarin (2.0%), and Turkish (1.9%). The suburb is known for numerous parks and gardens including Cole Reserve, Austin Reserve, Kelvin Thomson Reserve, and Gavin Park. The Moonee Ponds Creek flows through several parks. Pascoe Vale Railway Station on the Craigieburn line provides access to Broadmeadows, Craigieburn, and Melbourne CBD. Tram route 58 terminates at Bell Street in Pascoe Vale South.
