Local history
Mill Park is located 18 kilometres north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Whittlesea local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 28,712 at the 2021 census, showing a slight decline from 29,710 in 2016 as the area matured. The suburb takes its name from the flour mill built in the locality during the early settlement period. Mill Park's boundaries extend from South Morang and Epping to the north, Plenty and the Blossom Park estates to the east, Bundoora and Thomastown to the south, and Lalor to the west.
Following severe bushfires in 1957, the Clear Hill estate was subdivided into smaller residential allotments. The area now known as Yellow Gum Park was purchased by Reid Quarries Pty Ltd in 1959, which quarried materials used in constructing many of Melbourne's early skyscrapers. Boral Australia took over operations in the 1960s, but the plant closed in the early 1970s due to groundwater seepage, which created the lake locals now know as Blue Lake. Residential development accelerated during the 1970s following earlier subdivision in Bundoora, with a kindergarten, pre-school centre, and shopping complex completed by decade's end.
The Stables Shopping Centre and Redleap Avenue commemorate the solidly built Redleap racing stables on the historic Miller property, while the Plough Hotel honors the Plough Inn that once served the area. Mill Park features approximately 60 parks covering 18.3% of its total area, reflecting the suburb's emphasis on green space and recreational amenities. The suburb serves as the northern suburbs' home for softball, with the Northern District Softball Association based at Mill Park Reserve on Morang Drive, the only softball association in the area. The RMIT University Bundoora campus sits within walking distance of parts of Mill Park, providing convenient tertiary education access.
