Local history
Mernda is located 26 kilometres north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Whittlesea local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 23,369 at the 2021 census, representing extraordinary growth of 42% from 16,458 in 2016. European settlement began in 1841 with the construction of The Bridge Inn, the first structure built by European settlers. That same year, a small flour mill was established on the Plenty River, creating the nucleus of a village in this historically significant location.
From the early 2000s, suburbanisation transformed the area with several new housing subdivisions, including Mernda Villages, Settlers Hill, Everton Gardens, Bridge Inn Rise, Berry Lane, Mernda Ridge, Woodland Waters, Hawkstowe, Riverdale, and Renaissance Rise. In 2009, Working Heritage acquired the historic Carome property, repairing and updating it for community use as a café and community garden. Rail transport returned to Mernda on 26 August 2018 after almost 60 years—significantly earlier than the originally planned 2027 completion date, due to advocacy from the South Morang and Mernda Rail Alliance responding to rising population and congestion.
Major infrastructure improvements continue, with Major Road Projects Victoria appointing a construction partner in November 2021 for The Bridge Inn Road Upgrade between Plenty and Yan Yean roads, scheduled for completion by 2025. The project will add extra lanes, install traffic lights, construct bridges over the Plenty River, and build new walking and cycling paths. In April 2023, the historic Wollert Methodist Church was relocated to Carome Homestead as part of the Epping Road Upgrade. The suburb features approximately 104 parks covering 9.4% of its area. Educational facilities expanded significantly from 2015-2017 with Mernda Central P-12 College and Mernda Park Primary School, complementing existing schools including Mernda Primary School and St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
