Local history
Hadfield was previously part of Glenroy and was gazetted as a separate suburb in 1999. The suburb was named after Rupert Hadfield, a former president of Broadmeadows Shire.
First marketed as the Park Estate in the late 1940s, Hadfield was initially notorious for its challenging road conditions with quagmire roads and rocks that damaged vehicles. Water seepage through the area was later reduced by a retarding basin built in Box Forest Road.
Until the 1950s, parts of Hadfield were used for sheep grazing. A primary school in Exeter Street (initially named North Park) opened in 1964. By this time, many roads remained unmade, with the last unpaved road sealed in 1968.
A shopping centre was established on the western edge of Hadfield, including a supermarket, with smaller corner stores on other perimeters. The suburb has developed into a well-established residential area with strong Italian, Greek, and Lebanese communities.
