Local history
Greenvale is situated 20 kilometres north of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Hume local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 21,274 at the 2021 census, showing remarkable growth of 37.6% from 15,466 in 2016. Greenvale takes its name from a farm owned by local farmer John McKerchar. The area was originally part of the Parish of Yuroke, from which it first derived its identity.
Historical records from 1863 mention the area as Greens Gully, home to several estates. A post office opened in 1871 to serve the growing community. Large numbers of settlers began farming in Greenvale, attracted by superior land quality compared to surrounding areas. The Greenvale Reservoir was constructed in 1973, becoming a defining feature of the suburb's landscape. During the 1980s, Greenvale experienced significant growth with numerous shopping centres, schools, and recreational facilities established. Between 1905 and 1998, the suburb housed Greenvale Sanatorium, Victoria's first dedicated public health facility.
Although positioned only ten minutes from Melbourne Airport, Greenvale maintained a semi-rural character until recently, characterized by larger farm holdings north of the town centre past Somerton Road. Three major farms, including one known as Hacienda bordering Aitken College, are now planned for development into new housing estates. The most common ancestries include Italian (19.9%), Australian (13.9%), English (11.5%), Turkish (5.9%), and Greek (3.9%). Approximately 65% of residents are Australian-born, with significant communities from Italy, Iraq, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and India. Greenvale Lakes, a housing estate near Greenvale Reservoir, features Kolbe Catholic College. The suburb has approximately 25 parks covering 36.2% of its total area, making it one of the greenest suburbs in Melbourne's north. Greenvale Football Club is one of the Essendon District Football League's most successful teams, having won the A Grade premiership twice.
