Local history
Glenroy is located 12 kilometres north of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Merri-bek local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 23,792 at the 2021 census, showing growth of 7% from 22,245 in 2016. The area was originally home to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation before British colonisation in 1835. The Glenroy Estate, bounded by Moonee Ponds Creek, Camp Road, the Northern Golf Club, and Rhodes Parade, was purchased in Sydney in 1838 by speculators Hughes and Hosking.
Historical accounts credit different individuals with naming the suburb. While the Cameron family may have named it as part of their Run, Donald Angus Kennedy, who bought the estate in the mid-1840s, is credited with bestowing the name according to his 1864 obituary in The Argus. Kennedy's mother was Grace (née Cameron). Initial development started with a small settlement around the North East railway line in the late 19th century, with Glenroy Post Office opening on 22 October 1888. The 136-year-old post office closed on 25 August 2023.
After World War II, significant development occurred when organisations including Australian National Airways, the War Services Homes Commission, and the Housing Commission of Victoria developed large areas of Glenroy. Residential development continued rapidly through the 1950s, with a Glenroy East Post Office operating from 1958 to 1977. On 15 December 1994, when the City of Broadmeadows was abolished, suburbs south of the Western Ring Road, including Glenroy, transferred to the City of Moreland (now City of Merri-bek). According to the 2021 census, 50.8% of residents were born in Australia, with significant communities from Nepal, India, Italy, Pakistan, and Lebanon. The most common religions were Catholicism (23.6%), No Religion (22.5%), Islam (18.7%), and Hinduism (10.8%).
