Local history
Fawkner is situated 12 kilometres north of Melbourne's Central Business District, straddling the Cities of Hume and Merri-bek local government areas. The suburb recorded a population of 14,274 at the 2021 census. The area was originally called Box Forest and formed part of John Pascoe Fawkner's estate. In 1867, John Jukes purchased land in the area and named it Fawkner in honour of the pioneer settler, with his grandson David Jukes continuing to live there until the 1970s.
The opening of the Upfield railway line on 8 October 1889, electrified to Fawkner on 2 December 1920, encouraged residential development in the south of the suburb. By 1910, there were 35 houses within walking distance of Fawkner station. The City of Coburg Electricity Supply Department extended electricity to Fawkner in 1920. Returned soldiers began settling the suburb in the 1920s, with post office directories listing 180 buildings by 1939. North Fawkner remained a dairy farm owned by the Coyne family until 1945.
The post-World War II period saw the most significant development, with the Housing Commission building the first public housing in 1949, continuing through the 1960s with the Moomba Park estate development, named after the initial Labour Day Moomba Parade held in 1955. Additional facilities established included Fawkner Swimming Pool in 1964 and Fawkner Library in 1969. The suburb was transferred from the City of Broadmeadows to the City of Moreland (now City of Merri-bek) in December 1994. According to the 2021 census, 45.2% of residents were born in Australia, with significant communities from Italy and Pakistan. The most common religions were Catholicism (33.5%) and Islam (31.9%), reflecting the suburb's diverse multicultural character.
