Local history
Epping is located 18 kilometres north of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Whittlesea local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 33,489 at the 2021 census, showing steady growth from 32,395 in 2016. Epping is bounded by Mill Park and Lalor to the south, Somerton to the west, South Morang to the east, and Wollert to the north.
The area's European settlement began in the mid-19th century, with Epping Post Office opening on 1 September 1857. The Epping Road Board was established a year later, and by 1870 the area became part of Darebin Shire, which was renamed Epping Shire in 1893 before merging with Whittlesea Shire in 1915. Early settlers were predominantly of Irish origin, though English, Scots, and Germans also established farms in the area, with dairy farming being particularly important.
The Melbourne to Whittlesea railway opened in 1889, significantly boosting local industry through the transport of milk and quarry products. The original Epping township, built on higher ground west of Darebin Creek to avoid flooding, features several older bluestone buildings constructed from locally quarried volcanic plains stone. The suburb contains approximately 107 parks covering 17.6% of its total area, reflecting its emphasis on green space.
Educational facilities are extensive, including St Monica's College—one of Australia's biggest Catholic high schools—and Mill Park Secondary College's senior campus, one of Victoria's largest public schools. Epping Primary School has operated since 1872, making it one of the oldest in the area. Melbourne Polytechnic's Epping campus is Victoria's largest provider of agricultural training, offering courses from certificate to bachelor's degree level. Pacific Epping shopping centre, located near the railway station, serves as the main commercial hub adjacent to The Northern Hospital.
