Local history
Doreen is situated 29 kilometres north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, straddling both the City of Whittlesea and Shire of Nillumbik local government areas. The suburb recorded a population of 27,122 at the 2021 census, showing substantial growth of 27.4% from 21,298 in 2016. European settlement began in 1844 when Patrick Reid established his holding, naming the area Hazel Glen. Following Reid's land subdivision in 1862, additional settlers arrived, prompting the construction of a Methodist church on the corner of Yan Yean Road and Chapel Lane, which opened that same year.
The Post Office opened on 8 December 1870 as Hazelglen, later renamed Doreen in 1895. The suburb is unusually divided by Yan Yean Road, with the eastern portion remaining rural within the Shire of Nillumbik and contiguous with Yarrambat and Nutfield, while the western portion within the City of Whittlesea has experienced significant suburban housing development. Doreen's landscape features green, hilly terrain surrounded by the foothills of the Yarra Ranges to the east and north, and the forested banks of the Plenty River to the west. The area's urban fringe location supports diverse wildlife and birdlife.
North of the suburb sits Yan Yean Reservoir, Melbourne's oldest reservoir, providing a scenic backdrop. The median age of 31 is notably younger than state and national medians, reflecting the suburb's appeal to young families. Approximately 81% of the population was born in Australia according to 2016 census data. Educational facilities include six schools within the suburb, with RMIT University's Bundoora campus approximately 15 minutes' drive away and La Trobe University's Bundoora campus about 30 minutes away. Yarra Plenty Regional Library operates a mobile library service visiting Doreen regularly.
