The suburb recorded a population of 65,178 at the 2021 census, representing significant growth from 50,347 in 2016. Much of Craigieburn sits more than 200 metres above sea level, with Mount Ridley being the northernmost hill in northwestern metropolitan Melbourne, offering clear views of the city skyline 29.7 kilometres away.
The suburb is bounded by Mount Ridley Road, the Hume Freeway and Donnybrook Road to the north, Merri Creek to the east, the Craigieburn railway line to the south, and Mickleham Road to the west. This strategic location has made Craigieburn a hub for northern Melbourne development.
Major infrastructure includes Craigieburn Plaza Shopping Centre, which opened in 1975, and the newer Highlands shopping centre from 2011. The Reserve Bank of Australia Note Printing Works is located in Craigieburn, along with an expanding industrial estate beside the Hume Highway. The Craigieburn Bypass opened in 2005, improving traffic flow around the suburb.
Educational facilities expanded rapidly from the 1980s onwards, with Craigieburn Secondary College and Craigieburn South Primary School opening in 1984.
