Local history
Originally named Pentridge in 1840, the suburb's name was changed to Coburg in 1870, inspired by the impending visit of the Duke of Edinburgh, who was a member of the royal house of Saxe-Coburg. The area was settled when Alfred Langhorne built The Homestead, and the first inn, The Golden Fleece, was built on Sydney Road in 1842.
Twenty-one farms were established in the area by 1849. With the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s, the population grew rapidly. Water mains from Yan Yean were connected in 1858, and the Pentridge District Road Board was formed in 1859 to establish local government.
Bluestone quarrying became a major industry from the 1850s, with 41 quarries operating by 1875. The most famous landmark, HM Prison Pentridge, was established in December 1850 when 16 prisoners were moved from an overcrowded Melbourne Gaol. The prison housed some of Australia's most notorious criminals, including Ned Kelly. A public meeting in 1867 called for the suburb's name change, as residents were stigmatised by living in an area known for its prison.
By 1899, there were 6,000 people in the district. Coburg was gazetted as a borough in 1905, with Thomas Greenwood becoming the first mayor. The Public Hall was extended in 1909, and a new Town Hall was built and opened in 1923. Lake Reserve, a popular picnic spot on the Merri Creek, was developed when land was purchased in 1912 and a weir constructed in 1915.
After World War I, significant development occurred east of Sydney Road. In June 1994, the City of Coburg merged with the City of Brunswick to become the City of Moreland (now City of Merri-bek).
